Homeful.ca is a free service founded by volunteers, each of whom had the same end goal in mind:
“Let’s create a digital tool that helps refugees and others in need in our community find the donations they need most and connect directly with donors who want to help.”
Yani Roumeliotis, a web developer was building a platform to help address the shortage of storage spaces for donated goods in the Ottawa area. Through the Refugee613 network, Yani met up with Jennifer Jeppsson and Anne Pham-Huy, who were also looking to develop a similar platform that could serve as a Kijiji-style solution for donations to the refugee community.
Anne and Jennifer combined efforts with Yani and consequently the platform evolved to reflect the group’s mutual vision.
The last two members of Homeful.ca joined in to offer insight into the needs of key target demographics: John Texeira is a member of a large Ottawa-based private sponsorship group who has brought insight into the world of private sponsors, and Johanne Colas, a social worker with experience working with clients who need community support, has offered helpful advice and communications coordination throughout that network.
Refugee 613 is Ottawa’s coordinating body for the city’s response to the refugee crisis. They fostered a collaborative spirit that brought this team of 5 together and has also provided feedback and initial communications support to help launch the service.
